York Divers is a Handicapped Scuba Association facility!

Learning to Scuba with Disabilities.

Handicapped students will be trained and certified according to HSA Physical Performance Standards. A multilevel Certification system enables us to train people with a wide range of disabilities to scuba dive! This includes paraplegia, quadriplegia, even the vision impaired or those with high-functioning brain injuries or mild developmental delays. We base our students diving proficiency on their ability to assist another diver in the water. Each person is evaluated on an individual basis depending on their abilities and needs.

Adaptive Open Water Diver Course

We teach scuba to people with a wide range of disabilities, including paraplegia, quadriplegia, visually impaired, PTSD, and those with high-functioning intellectual disabilities. We base our multilevel certification on the ability of the diver to assist another diver using basic rescue skills, or the type of assistance they may need.

The Adaptive Open Water Scuba Diver course consists of three main phases:

  Academics/Knowledge Development - Online Training
You will learn the basics of diving techniques, how diving affects your body, diving safety, equipment selection and maintenance and dive planning. You will also preview the skills you'll learn in the water. PADI's Online Training program is designed so that you can learn the academics at your own pace when it is convenient for you. Students will receive their course login upon registration and payment to York Divers.

PADI eLearning products require parent/guardian permission to be secured

Confined Water Dives to learn basic scuba skills
Confined water sessions are done in a warm indoor pool. Students begin in shallow water and learn all the basic skills needed to confidently and safely enjoy scuba diving. Sessions are held once a week five weeks, with the option to add additional sessions as needed based on the students needs.

Open Water Certification Dives to use your skills and explore
You must successfully complete five dives over two days for Handicap Scuba Open Water Diver. PADI Open Water Diver certification may be offered based on student's ability to perform skills as required.
